When the requirement for HSE registration ceased, responsibility to complete due diligence on the standard of training provided was devolved to those requiring it i.e. those booking the courses. A customer there for had responsibility for ensuring the training received was fit for purpose and given by suitably qualified trainers.
Unhappy with the changes, a number of awarding organisations decided to create an industry standard set of first aid courses compliant with OfQual regulations - OfQual being the national regulator of adult qualifications in England. Subject areas are assessed against a nationally recognised framework to ensure learners meet the required competence and the training as a whole conforms to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Under this system due diligence is assured by virtue of training providers offering OfQual compliant qualifications..
Thus, when you choose an OfQual regulated provider such as Kenai Training there is a guaranteed standard of training. Individual trainers are audited and their actual training methods independently assessed on at least a yearly basis. Trainers will be suitably qualified first-aiders themselves and also possess qualifications in Education, Training and Assessment.
Because unregulated first aid courses are still an option it means anything can be taught by anyone with or without formal qualifications, subject matter experience or assessment experience. Training providers can use this to their advantage by adding additional subject areas relevant to their clients requests. However - without a verification process the HSE do not support this type of course.
